Motor Oils
Renault engine-oil requirements are manufacturer-specific specifications. An ACEA sequence may be part of the requirement, but it is not automatically interchangeable with a Renault RN specification. Select an oil that explicitly states the exact Renault requirement and the required SAE viscosity in the current owner’s handbook or Renault service documentation.
Current and later Renault requirements
Renault RN17 — A current Renault requirement normally associated with SAE 5W-30, ACEA C3 oils. It is used across a broad range of later petrol and diesel applications, including many Euro 6 diesel engines. Renault’s current co-branded lubricant application chart states that RN17 is suitable where RN0700 or RN0710 is required; nevertheless, this must not override a vehicle-specific requirement for RN0720, RN17 FE, RN17 RSA or AN2022.
Renault RN17 FE — A fuel-economy requirement commonly supplied as SAE 0W-20 and aligned with ACEA C5. It is for engines specifically designed for RN17 FE; it is not a general lower-viscosity substitute for other RN requirements.
Renault RN17 RSA — A high-output-engine requirement, normally supplied as SAE 0W-40 and aligned with ACEA C3. It is used for specified Renault Sport applications, including Mégane R.S. 1.8 Turbo engines. Use only where Renault documentation calls for RN17 RSA.
Renault AN2022 — A newer requirement, normally supplied as SAE 0W-16 and carrying API SP performance. Renault’s application chart identifies it for specified E-Tech full-hybrid applications, including Austral, Espace and Rafale. It is a vehicle-specific requirement rather than a replacement for the RN series.
Established RN requirements
Renault RN0700 — An established requirement found on many earlier petrol engines and diesel engines without a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Oils carrying RN0700 are commonly available in several viscosity grades and may also carry ACEA A3/B4 or A5/B5 claims. For later applications, Renault’s lubricant chart permits RN17 where RN0700 is specified, subject to the vehicle documentation.
Renault RN0710 — An established higher-performance requirement used on many earlier petrol and non-DPF diesel applications, including some turbocharged and Renault Sport engines. Products carrying RN0710 frequently also carry RN0700, but the required RN claim—not the shared ACEA category alone—remains the important identifier. RN17 may be used where Renault documentation permits it; some performance applications instead require RN17 RSA or retain RN0710.
Renault RN0720 — The established low-SAPS requirement for specified diesel engines with a DPF, generally associated with SAE 5W-30 and ACEA C4. It remains relevant for many earlier dCi DPF applications. RN0720 is not simply “ACEA C3 plus Renault requirements”; ACEA C4 is the relevant base sequence. Do not replace it with RN17 solely because both may be SAE 5W-30 or intended for after-treatment-equipped engines.
“Low-SAPS” refers to controlled sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur content, which helps protect exhaust after-treatment systems. See the ACEA engine-oil sequences for an explanation of the A/B and C sequence families.
Manual Transmission and Reduction-Gear Fluids
Transmission fluid selection is gearbox-specific. An API gear-oil category alone does not establish suitability, particularly for synchronized manual transmissions, dual-clutch transmissions, e-drive reduction gears or axles.
Tranself NFX SAE 75W — The current low-viscosity manual-transmission fluid for covered Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi applications. It is API GL-4, not API GL-5. TotalEnergies identifies it for Renault transmission families Sx, Jxx, TLx, NDx, NDk1, Pxx and DBx, and for specified E-Tech and plug-in-hybrid gearbox/reduction-gear applications. It supersedes Tranself NFJ 75W-80 and Tranself NFP 75W-80 for their respective covered applications.
Tranself NFJ 75W-80 and Tranself NFP 75W-80 — Earlier manual-transmission-fluid designations. They are retained here for identification in older manuals and service records, but NFX SAE 75W is the documented successor for the applications covered by NFJ and NFP.
Tranself TRJ, TRP, TRT, TRX and TRZ — Older Renault transmission-fluid designations encountered in historical service information. Do not identify a replacement from the API GL category, an assumed viscosity match or synchronizer material alone. Confirm the original Renault fluid reference, gearbox code and current Renault workshop information before selecting an alternative.
Tranself Universal FE 80W-90 — A separate multifunctional axle fluid specified for certain rear-axle applications; it is not a general manual-transmission-fluid substitute.
For all engine, gearbox and axle fluids, verify the exact requirement against current vehicle manufacturer documentation, especially where a vehicle has been updated by a service campaign, has a hybrid powertrain, or is operated outside its original market.
