Volvo Passenger Car Oil Specifications
Volvo passenger-car engine-oil requirements are engine-, model-year-, and market-specific. Volvo has used both its own VCC designations and industry sequences such as ACEA and API. The designation on the oil container, the SAE viscosity grade, and the requirements in the vehicle documentation must all be checked together.
Current Volvo documentation for some 2026 models specifies a fully synthetic SAE 0W-20 oil meeting at least ACEA C6 and API SP, and lists VCC C6SP SAE 0W-20 as Volvo’s recommended specification. Earlier Volvo documentation for many vehicles instead calls specifically for VCC RBS0-2AE SAE 0W-20, while older engines may require ACEA A5/B5 or one of the earlier VCC 0W-30 specifications.

What the industry terms mean
ACEA engine-oil sequences are European industry performance categories. The low-SAPS C categories are designed with catalyst and particulate-filter compatibility in mind. ACEA C6 additionally includes performance aimed at modern turbocharged direct-injection gasoline and diesel engine concerns. API SP is a gasoline-engine category that adds protection for low-speed pre-ignition, timing-chain wear, deposits, sludge, and varnish. These industry claims are useful context, but they do not by themselves establish compliance with a particular Volvo VCC designation.
SAE 0W-20, 0W-30, and 5W-30 describe viscosity behavior, not a complete performance approval. An oil with the correct viscosity can still be unsuitable if it lacks the required Volvo or industry performance designation.

Use the requirement for the exact vehicle, engine, model year, and market. Volvo support pages and manuals can differ between otherwise similar vehicles.
Where Volvo specifies a VCC designation, look for that exact designation on the product label or in the oil manufacturer’s current technical documentation.
Do not treat VCC C6SP, VCC RBS0-2AE, VCC 95200377, VCC 95200356, ACEA A5/B5, ACEA C5, and ACEA C6 as universal equivalents.
