Ford WSS codes are more important than the large viscosity number

A Ford or Lincoln owner may see a requirement such as WSS-M2C945-B1, WSS-M2C961-A1, WSS-M2C962-A1, or WSS-M2C971-A1 in the owner’s manual. These are Ford material-specification codes for lubricants. They identify the oil performance profile Ford calls for in a particular application; they are not simply another way to write 5W-20, 0W-20, or 5W-30.

The practical rule is simple: begin with the exact engine, model year, and market-specific owner documentation, then match both the stated SAE viscosity grade and the Ford WSS code. A 5W-30 bottle is not automatically suitable merely because the vehicle also uses 5W-30, and a newer WSS number is not automatically a universal replacement for every earlier number.

How to read a Ford engine-oil specification

In a code such as WSS-M2C971-A1, WSS identifies a Ford engineering material specification. The remaining characters identify the material family and revision. The code should be treated as a complete identifier: changing a digit or suffix can mean a different requirement.

Ford manuals often pair the code with a viscosity grade and may also refer to an API Certification Mark. That does not make the three items redundant:

  • SAE 5W-20, 0W-20, or 5W-30 identifies viscosity behavior.

  • Ford WSS identifies Ford’s required material specification for the vehicle application.

An oil can carry a current API category and still not be the correct choice if it lacks the viscosity or Ford WSS claim required by the manual. Conversely, do not assume a bottle that says it is “recommended for” a Ford is equivalent to a clearly stated claim that it meets the required Ford specification. The table is a reading aid, not an application chart. Ford uses different requirements across engines, vehicle lines, model years, operating conditions, and markets. A specific vehicle can also have an owner-manual exception for extremely cold conditions or severe use.

What changed with WSS-M2C971-A1?

WSS-M2C971-A1 is a current Ford 5W-30 requirement seen in 2026 Ford owner documentation, including applications that previously used other 5W-30 WSS codes. Current Motorcraft documentation associates a 5W-30 oil meeting WSS-M2C971-A1 with API SQ and ILSAC GF-7A performance.

That relationship is useful, but it should not be turned into a shortcut. API SQ and ILSAC GF-7A are broad industry categories; WSS-M2C971-A1 is Ford’s vehicle-material requirement. The presence of API SQ or GF-7A does not by itself prove that a particular 5W-30 meets WSS-M2C971-A1. Look for the full Ford code in the oil marketer’s technical data.

Likewise, a later-looking Ford code should not be presumed backward-compatible. Ford may publish a temporary top-up allowance or an alternative oil instruction for a particular model, but that is vehicle-specific guidance. It is not permission to replace the normal service-fill specification indefinitely.

Do not confuse normal fill, emergency top-up, and cold-climate alternatives

Owner manuals sometimes provide separate instructions for a limited top-up when the exact oil cannot be obtained. This is different from the normal oil-change recommendation. If Ford permits an API or ILSAC oil as a short-term substitute, follow the quantity limit and return to the specified WSS product at the next practical opportunity.

Cold-climate alternatives are also deliberate exceptions. For example, current Ford documentation for some 5W-30 applications lists a 0W-30 alternative under very low ambient-temperature conditions, with its own WSS-M2C973-A1 requirement. That does not authorize any 0W-30 in ordinary use, nor does it mean the vehicle has changed to a 0W-30 service recommendation.

A dependable oil-selection process

  1. Identify the exact vehicle, engine, model year, and market.

  2. Check the current owner manual or Ford service information for the normal-fill viscosity and complete WSS code.

  3. Check for notes on cold climate, towing, track use, top-up substitutions, or oil-life monitoring.

  4. Choose an oil whose label or manufacturer technical data explicitly states that it meets the required Ford WSS specification.

  5. Confirm the API or ILSAC category required by the manual where it is stated, but do not use that category as a substitute for the Ford code.
