What JASO GLV classifications mean

JASO GLV-1 and GLV-2 are Japanese gasoline-engine-oil performance classifications for low-viscosity oils. They are intended for four-stroke gasoline engines and were developed around the dual goals of fuel economy and engine durability.

The important point is that a GLV designation is not simply another way to state an SAE viscosity grade. SAE 0W-8, 0W-12, 0W-16 and 0W-20 describe viscosity ranges; GLV-1 or GLV-2 describes an oil-performance category. An oil must have both the viscosity and the performance designation required by the vehicle manufacturer.

That distinction matters because modern engines are designed around specific oil-flow, oil-pressure, wear-control and fuel-economy characteristics. Moving to a thicker oil because it appears more protective, or selecting a thinner oil because it seems more efficient, can ignore requirements built into the engine’s lubrication system.

GLV-1: the ultra-low-viscosity category

GLV-1 was introduced for SAE 0W-8 and 0W-12 oils. These are exceptionally low-viscosity grades intended to reduce fluid friction, especially during warm-up and normal operation. The category includes requirements for such areas as oxidation resistance, low-temperature cleanliness, valvetrain-wear control and fuel economy.

The 0W portion of a grade addresses cold-temperature cranking and pumping behavior. The number after the W identifies the oil’s high-temperature viscosity grade. GLV-1 should not be confused with an API or ILSAC category. API and ILSAC classifications are widely used gasoline-engine-oil systems, while GLV-1 was created specifically to support the very low 0W-8 and 0W-12 viscosity range. A container carrying an API service category does not automatically make it a GLV-1 oil, and a GLV-1 statement does not by itself establish suitability for every engine that uses a low-viscosity oil.

GLV-2: low-viscosity oil with a different approach

GLV-2 was added under the 2024 revision of JASO M 364. It applies to SAE 0W-16 and 0W-20 oils. Unlike GLV-1, which reaches lower high-temperature viscosity grades, GLV-2 aims to retain the SAE 16 or SAE 20 high-temperature grade while lowering viscosity in the intermediate and lower temperature range through a very high viscosity index.

In plain English, GLV-2 is designed to help an oil flow with less resistance before the engine is fully hot without changing its assigned hot-grade category. The standard also includes low-speed pre-ignition protection requirements for GLV-2, reflecting the needs of modern turbocharged gasoline engines. LSPI is an abnormal combustion event that can occur in some direct-injected turbocharged engines; it is not a condition solved merely by choosing a lower-viscosity oil.

What are GLV-2A and GLV-2B?

You may encounter GLV-2A or GLV-2B on product information or a technical data sheet. These suffixes identify which JASO fuel-economy test route the oil passed: GLV-2A uses the firing fuel-economy test, while GLV-2B uses the motored fuel-economy test.

They do not create a simple “A is better than B” ranking, and they do not tell you which engines can use the oil. Neither suffix changes the need to match the oil to the vehicle manufacturer’s specified viscosity and performance requirement.

How to shop for a GLV oil correctly

Start with the owner’s manual, service information or official manufacturer documentation for the exact model year and engine. Check all of the following:

  • the required SAE viscosity grade;

  • the required oil standard or manufacturer approval;

  • whether an alternative grade is permitted only temporarily; and

  • any restrictions based on climate, towing, track use or severe operation.

For example, a current Toyota manual for one hybrid application specifies JASO GLV-1 in SAE 0W-8 and permits 0W-16 only when 0W-8 is unavailable, with replacement by 0W-8 at the next oil change. That is a vehicle-specific contingency instruction, not permission to substitute 0W-16 for 0W-8 in every GLV-1 application.

When comparing products, look for a clear GLV-1, GLV-2A or GLV-2B claim on the label or technical documentation. The JASO implementation panel publishes a filed-product list, which can be a useful cross-check. However, filing is not the same thing as a vehicle manufacturer approval: the product supplier remains responsible for its classification and quality claim.

Also check for the separate API or ILSAC requirement stated by the vehicle maker. The API specification overview and ILSAC oil specifications can help decode those additional labels.
