Porsche engine-oil codes such as A40, C20, C30, C40, and C40 GT are manufacturer approvals. They are not interchangeable names for SAE viscosity grades, and they are not a simple oldest-to-newest performance ladder. The code required for a particular Porsche is determined by its engine, model year, and sometimes its exact variant.
The practical rule is straightforward: start with the current Porsche owner documentation or workshop information for the vehicle, then select an oil that carries the exact Porsche approval required. A bottle marked 0W-40, for example, may have the same viscosity grade as the specified oil while lacking the required Porsche approval.
What a Porsche oil approval means
An approval is Porsche’s acceptance of a specific lubricant formulation for a defined requirement. It is stronger evidence than a vague statement such as “suitable for,” “recommended for,” or “meets the requirements of.” Look for clear approval language in the product data sheet and on the package, then make sure the code matches the vehicle requirement exactly.
This distinction matters because engine oil must do more than establish a certain thickness. A40: common, but not universal
A40 is the approval many owners associate with classic and earlier water-cooled Porsche sports cars. C20, C30, and C40: the vehicle allocation comes first
For recent Porsches, the required code can vary sharply within one model family. Porsche’s model-year 2026 allocation, dated May 22, 2026, illustrates why engine identification matters. The Cayenne and Cayenne E-Hybrid use C20 in that bulletin, while several Cayenne V8 variants use C40. In the same model year, Macan and Macan T are allocated C20, while Macan S and GTS are allocated C30. The Panamera range likewise includes both C30 and C40 applications.
Porsche identifies the current viscosity classes in that model-year allocation as 0W-20 for C20, 0W-30 for C30, and 0W-40 for C40. The bulletin also states that only 0W-grade oils may be used for vehicles from model year 2021 onward. That is a useful cross-check, but the approval code still comes first. The correct conclusion is not “all newer Porsches use 0W oil”; it is “use the exact 0W-grade oil carrying the specified Porsche approval.”
C40 GT is a separate approval, not a marketing label
The words “GT” are meaningful in this context. Porsche lists C40 GT separately from C40, although both are shown as 0W-40 in recent allocation material. For example, Porsche’s model-year 2026 bulletin assigns C40 GT to the 911 GT3, while Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera GTS, and Turbo S entries in the same bulletin use C40. Therefore, a standard C40 oil should not be used in a C40 GT application unless Porsche documentation expressly permits it. How to verify an oil before service or top-up
Identify the exact model year, engine, and variant. “911” or “Cayenne” alone is not enough.

Confirm the oil’s SAE grade as well as its explicit Porsche approval on the current package or product data sheet.
